Question： What is Mr. Yamada doing? Will you help him?
✔「I + は + person + に／を／の + V-て form ＋ あげます。」is used when doing something for someone.
※「あげる」see N4 Unit2-1.

例：　手伝います→手伝ってあげます。
　　　 ⇒　私は山田さんを手伝ってあげます。
Eg.:    I will help Mr. Yamada.

✔ Postpositional particle  changes by the type of verb.
・ 「に」: 教えます(teach), 貸します(lend), 書きます(write), etc.
例：　私はこどもに日本語を教えてあげます。
Eg.:   I teach children Japanese.

・「を」: 案内します(guide), 送ります(send), 紹介します(introduce), etc.
例：　私は友達を案内してあげます。
Eg.:   I guide my friend.

・「の」: 掃除します(clean), 修理します(repair), 直します(correct), etc.
例：　私は友達の部屋を掃除してあげます。
Eg.:    I clean up my friend’s room.

※ 「V-て form ＋ あげます。」may be offensive when used for someone meeting for the first time or someone in higher social position/elder than you. So be careful when using this form.

1. 妹が病気のとき、ご飯を作ってあげました。

   I cooked meal for my younger sister when she was sick.

2. 手伝って／一緒に行って／何もして／気づいて　あげられなくて、申し訳ないです。

   I’m sorry I couldn’t help you/go with you/do anything for you/realize.

Question：Can you speak English? Who taught you English?
✔ 「I + は + person + に + V-て form ＋ もらいます。」is used to express the gratitute when someone does something positive to you.
例：　教えます　→　教えてもらいました。
　　　⇒　私は先生に英語を教えてもらいました。
Eg.:   The teacher taught me English.

✔ When you ask someone to do something for you, use「V-てform ＋ もらえませんか。」 or 「V-て form ＋ もらえますか。」.
例：　すみません、ペンを貸してもらえませんか／もらえますか。
Eg.:    Excuse me, can I borrow your pen?

※ 「V-てform＋もらえますか。」 is far more polite expression. But, be careful when using it, because it can’t be used for someone in higher social position/elder than you.

1. ホテルの人に、荷物を預かってもらいました。

   I had a hotel staff keep my bag.

2. 姉についてきてもらいました。

   I had my older sister accompany me.

3. 田中さん、（ちょっと）資料を見せて／しょうゆを取って　もらえませんか／もらえますか。

   Mr. Tanaka, can I see the reference materials a little?/can you pass me the soy sauce?

4. すみません、テーブルを動かす／これを運ぶ／ここを片づける　の（を）手伝ってもらえませんか／もらえますか。

   Excuse me, can you help me move the table?/carry this?/clean up here?

✔「someone + は + [I に] + V-て form ＋ くれます。」has the same meaning with 「I + は + someone + に + V-て form+ もらいます。」

例：　私は先生に英語を教えてもらいました。　
　　　⇒　先生は [私に] 英語を教えてくれました。
Eg.:   The teacher taught me English.

※ The meaning of 「V-て form +もらいます。」 is almost the same as 「V-て form＋ くれます。」, 「V-て form＋ くれます。」has a nuance that the other person (teacher) is willingly doing the action.

1. 先生が　駅まで車で送って／ランチをおごって／夕食をごちそうして／レポートをほめて　くれたんです。

   The teacher drove me to the station/bought me lunch/bought me dinner/praised my paper.
